Problems With Technology in the Classroom

1. Technology is expensive and is always changing, and not all schools have the funds to keep up with all the latest technology.

2. There becomes a lack of clarity about the purpose of “school.” Technology is engaging on a creative level, but the students may be missing out on basic concepts like math and language.

3. Technology can result in lost learning time. If the teacher and students are not experienced with technology in the classroom, valuable time is often wasted on technical troubles. In addition, the teacher faces the difficulty of having a class full of students who are all at different skill levels.

4. Technology can be overused. This can lead to a variety of problems. Many students learn best by physically and mentally interacting with what they are studying. Computers cannot substitute for hands on experience with art supplies, science equipment or musical instruments.

5. Technology can become relied on by students to do the work for them. Students have increased stress factors and decreased problem-solving skills because they rely on gadgets to do the work for them.
